Haemosiderine is a pigmented form of iron storage that can be found in any organ with excessive accumulation of this mineral. Renal haemosiderine deposits may arise in the course of chronic haemolytic anaemia or as a result of acute haemoglobinuria. The pigment is produced when haemoglobin is degraded and can usually be seen as brown cytoplasmic granules in the tubular epithelial cells (H&E, 400x).
