One of the gross signs of pulmonary oedema
is the presence of foamy liquid, sometimes stained with blood, in the
lumen of the trachea and bronchi. This foamy liquid is produced when the
oedematous fluid mixes with the alveolar surfactant and, subsequently,
with inhaled air.
