Diffuse metastatic calcification in the lungs of a 12-year-old mixed breed dog. The lungs did not retract when the thoracic cavity was opened and exhibited an exceptionally firm consistency, grating when cut, due to diffuse calcium deposition in the pulmonary parenchyma. This metastatic calcification, which would have severely affected the animal’s quality of life, was most likely a consequence of chronic renal insufficiency leading to secondary hyperparathyroidism.
