Calcinosis cutis in the abdomen of a bitch. Note the firm, irregular, erythematous plaques which bulge from the skin. Calcinosis cutis consists in the deposition of inorganic salts, namely calcium, in the dermis, epidermis and subcutaneous tissue, causing lesions which may trigger pruritus and subsequent self-trauma. Hyperadrenocorticism is one of the most common causes associated with calcinosis cutis.
