A squamous cell carcinoma is a tumour derived from spinous cells of pavemented stratified epithelia. Histological analysis of the tumour reveals that the neoplastic epithelial cells are arranged in groups that accumulate in the dermal connective tissue. Undifferentiated tumours such as the one depicted in the image do not exhibit keratin pearls (keratinisation nests formed in the dermis). In this case, only isolated keratinized cells can be seen (H&E, 40x).
