Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a common condition of dogs over 5 years of age. The gland is almost invariably enlarged due to hyperplasia of the glandular epithelium and/or fibromuscular stroma. Histologically, papillary formations project into the lumen of irregular prostatic acini. Cystic dilation of the glandular elements is relatively common. Prostatic proliferative processes can be a cause of coprostasis secondary to rectal compression (H&E, 40x).
