Mesenteric torsion in a squirrel. Note the spiral-like structure on the left side of the abdominal cavity (to the right on the image) that appears to end in a nodular mass. Unrolling this structure revealed it to be a portion of mesenterium twisted around granulomatous lesions of undetermined aetiology (image on the right). No specific pathogenic bacteria or fungi were identified and special stains (PAS and Ziehl-Neelsen) for these microorganisms were both negative.
