Encephalic hypostasis in a 7-month-old female Siberian Tiger. As time elapses after death, the animal’s blood, in the absence of the pumping action created by heartbeat, begins to diffuse with gravity, accumulating in the areas and organs that are closer to the ground. This post-mortem change can be easily seen in paired organs and should be taken into account during necropsic examination. In this particular case, hypostasis is evident, with accumulation of blood in the vessels of the right cerebral hemisphere, which means death either occurred with the animal lying on her right side and/or that she remained in this position for several hours right after death.
